Serra do Roncador

Located in the eastern part of the state of Mato Grosso, the Serra do Roncador is a long chain of plateaus stretching approximately 600 kilometers between Barra do Garças and the Serra do Cachimbo. This spectacular mountain range, composed of plateaus separated by deep canyons, owes its name to the low-pitched sound produced by the wind as it blows through the cliffs at night, reminiscent of snoring.
Despite its proximity to the Amazon, the region is primarily characterized by cerrado landscapes, featuring savanna vegetation and imposing rock formations. The terrain also harbors numerous caves, some containing underground lakes with intensely blue waters, as well as sites of rock art.
Long isolated, the Serra do Roncador was traditionally inhabited by indigenous peoples such as the Bororo and the Xavante. Today, certain areas of the Serra do Roncador attract travelers seeking nature and adventure. There are impressive waterfalls, natural pools, and landscapes ideal for hiking, rock climbing, or rafting. Visits to indigenous territories, however, remain strictly regulated and require specific permits.
