Located on the border between the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, in southeastern Brazil, Serra da Bocaina is a national park created in 1971 with the aim of preserving natural ecosystems, such as its incredible biodiversity of flora and fauna. It is one of the few places in the country that houses animals threatened with extinction, such as the jaguar and the sloth, as well as 300 species of birds. It is also part of the Serra do Mar, with 60% of its territory located in Rio de Janeiro and 40% in São Paulo, and, therefore, includes some of its cities, such as Paraty and Angra dos Reis.
Its gateway is the small town of São José do Barreiro, in São Paulo, and is also the main seat of the Serra da Bocaina National Park and where most of its attractions are accessed. Among the main ones are the Gold Trail, Veados Waterfall, Pico da Bacia (Bucket Peak) and Pedra da Marcela (Marcela’s Mountain).
