Created in 1979 in the state of Piauí, Serra da Capivara National Park protects some of the oldest evidence of human presence in South America. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991, it covers nearly 130,000 hectares and contains around 400 archaeological sites.
These sites showcase impressive rock paintings and engravings, offering a unique glimpse into ancient cultural and historical heritage. The park lies within the semi-arid caatinga biome, featuring diverse landscapes of valleys, mountains, and plains.
Besides its archaeological significance, Serra da Capivara is a vital refuge for local biodiversity, preserving about 40% of Brazil’s protected caatinga. This remarkable area also helps deepen scientific understanding of the earliest human settlements on the American continent.
