Jericoacoara Beach

Located three hundred kilometers from the capital, Fortaleza, Jijoca de Jericoacoara is the northernmost municipality in the state of Ceará. The main attraction of this ancient fishing village is the beach of great natural beauty. There are gigantic moving dunes that disappear and reappear with the winds, coconut palms, limpid lagoons, mangroves, caves, protected beaches with calm sea, but also rocky beaches on the open sea with big waves, eventually conducive to surfing. The arid "sertão" landscapes that alternate with those of the coastline, the beauty of the freshwater and saltwater lagoons, the untouched beaches, the rocks carved by the wind enchant the visitor. Due to the geographic orientation of the beach, tourists can watch the sunrise and sunset over the ocean from the same huge dune close to the sea. The main sports are sandboarding in the dunes and the windsurfing, favored by the combination of calm waters and permanent winds. Jericoacoara is an environmental protection area of 200 km², where hunting, predatory fishing and any pollution are prohibited, which prevents the construction of paved roads and pavements. Access is by large 4x4. In 1984, The Washington Post described Jericoacoara Beach as one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world. The "Pedra Furada" (Pierced Stone) is one of the most emblematic tourist sites.
