The São Joaquim National Park is a Brazilian conservation unit for integral protection of nature located in the south of the country in the territories of the municipalities of Bom Jardim da Serra, Grão-Pará, Lauro Müller, Orléans and Urubici at the junction of the Serra Catarinense and the Serra do Mar. The park was created in July 1961 to preserve the Araucária forests, still abundant within its 49,800 hectares. The Park is also part of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest biome protection program. In addition to the conservation of existing ecosystems, the park has the mission of promoting research, environmental education, and public visitation. The landscapes are of incomparable beauty with postcards such as Pedra Furada, Morro da Igreja which culminates in 1,822 meters, in the northeast region and, in the center of the Park, the very high areas of the Campos de Santa Bárbara region, with altitudes above 1,650 meters. The geological structure dated 133 million years ago is composed of volcanic rocks (basalt) and sandstone formations.
