The Serra do Mar is a mountain range in Brazil that extends for approximately 1500 km, along the east / south coast from the state of Rio de Janeiro to the north of the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
In the state of Rio de Janeiro, Serra do Mar receives the local name of Serra dos Órgãos, which has the highest peaks of the entire Serra do Mar, such as the Pedra do Sino de Teresópolis (2,255 meters), the Caledônia peak (2,257 meters) in Nova Friburgo, and the Três Picos de Friburgo, the culmination of the entire Serra do Mar, with 2,366 meters of altitude. The
mountaineering season (from May to September) of the Serra dos Órgãos National Park, a conservation unit covering the municipalities of Guapimirim, Magé, Petrópolis and Teresópolis, with an area of 20,030 ha, has a worldwide reputation. The main route is the PetrópolisTeresópolis Crossing, which requires three days and is considered the most beautiful hike in
Brazil.In the state of São Paulo, the Serra do Mar crosses the three coastal regions (north, central, and south). The Serra do Mar State Park of São Paulo is the largest continuous biological corridor of protected Atlantic Forest in Brazil and covers approximately 332,000 hectares from the border with the state of Rio de Janeiro to the south coast of the state of São Paulo. In the park, which offers 21 trails and tourist support points, there are 373 species of birds and 111
species of mammals (almost half of the total fauna of the Atlantic Forest), in addition to 1.265
species of plants.
The highest altitudes in Paraná are also found in the Serra do Mar, with the following peaks standing out: Paraná (1922 meters), Caratuva (1856 meters), Siririca (1740 meters) and Marumbi (1551 meters).
