The Ecological Tourist Park Dunas de Genipabu located in the municipality of Extremoz, 20 km from Natal, is a mandatory stop for those visiting the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN). This place with a magical name is internationally known, in addition to its natural beauty, for the adrenaline of the tourist attractions it offers. The buggy dune trail, with risky climbs and descents from the top of the sand dunes, is considered the most exciting attraction of the place. It is also possible to take a very peaceful dromedary tour or simply enjoy the beautiful beach with warm, calm, and very clean waters for an excellent sea bath. You can also make a raft or a jet-ski tour. Other activities typical of the park are called “skibunda” and “aerobunda”. The first modality consists of sliding from the top of the dune sitting on a wooden plank until falling into the clear waters of a beautiful lagoon, with the other the tourist descends hanging from a steel cable and ends up falling into the lagoon with a lot of screams and hilarity. The lagoon also offers attractions such as freshwater bathing, pedal boats, and kayaks.
In Tupi, a language spoken by the indigenous people of the Brazilian coast in the 16th century, Genipabu means "river of the jenipapos". Jenipapo is a fruit with internal structures similar to miniature white dunes and is supposed to have given its name to the place for this particularity. The action of the wind, very intense on the coast of Rio Grande do Norte, moves the sand from one point to another, which makes the landscape always a novelty, but offers some risk to traffic for those who do not know the region well.
In addition to being charged a fee of R$ 10.00 for environmental preservation, it is necessary to pay a little money to contribute to the work of accredited tour guides and buggy drivers, expenses well compensated for the fun at the place.
The second largest park in the country's urban area, Parque Dunas de Genipabu has an area of ??about 1,172 ha. Located in an Environmental Preservation area, it has a great wealth of animals and plants from the Atlantic Forest. As one of the main postcards of Rio Grande do Norte the Park was the scene of numerous shootings of the Brazilian cinema and TV.
