The Mamirauá sustainable reserve
22-12-2024
The Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve, located in the state of Amazonas, in the middle Solimões region, is a Brazilian protected area component of the National System of Conservation Units.
It is located about 600 km west of Manaus, in the region of the middle course of the Solimões River and covers an area of 1,124,000 hectares. It is the largest forest reserve in Brazil dedicated exclusively to the protection of the Amazon floodplain.
The proposal of a Sustainable Development Reserve is to reconcile the conservation of biodiversity with sustainable development in a unit also inhabited by human populations. Some of the most important species of tropical woods are found in the protected areas of Mamirauá. Local human populations help preserve the reserve through their involvement in research, extension and management activities. The reserve has more than 300 species of cataloged fish, including ornamental ones, and also about 400 species of birds and at least 45 species of mammals.
